Aloo Toast Starters – Non Fried !

A crispy bread toast , topped with masala mashed potatoes , sev and chutneys! It just can’t get yummier than this , can it ? Aloo toast is a famous street food across India. It’s a must try recipe for you , because it can be a lip-smacking starter for your next party or an awesome tea-time snack!

This recipe is inspired by the famous street food – Aloo Toast. My introduction to aloo toast , happened on the streets of Hyderabad. And there was absolutely nothing in it , that you wouldn’t love.

I always remember to switch off my Calorie counter App, while enjoying the street food . I guess once in a while , its OK to just shut your eyes and gobble up these treats. But we don’t crave for these foods once in a while , do we? Specially with this monsoon season …. Cravings are on an all-time-high !

So I decided to give the street side aloo toast , a makeover , and went experimenting in my kitchen. Wanted to make it without deep frying . The result was these beautiful , crispy and chatpata – aloo toast starters !

Team it up with a hot cup of ginger tea , and you are all set for a great evening! You can always experiment with the toppings and chutneys , and personalize it for everyone in the family.

  1. For the masala mashed potatoes : take boiled mashed potatoes in a bowl . Add chopped onions , green chili, chaat masala , cumin powder and salt . Mix properly and keep aside.
  2. Take the bread slices, apply butter on both the sides and toast them nicely on a tawa, till they become crisp and golden brown from both sides.
  3. On top of these toasted bread slices , apply green chutney. Over it , spread a generous layer of masala mashed potatoes.
  4. Top it up with sev and drizzle the tangy tamarind chutney on it . Sprinkle some more chaat masala on it. Cut the slice into desired shape ( I loved the stripes ! )
  5. Serve with hot ginger tea . Or as starters to any meal!
Recipe Notes

TIPS

  • For toasting the bread , you may use the toaster or grill. We just need them to be perfectly crispy.
  • You can use some chopped tomatoes, onions and coriander leaves for topping too.
  • If the kids like tomato ketchup more than tamarind chutney, you can use it.
