Whenever we go out for dinner , there are only 2 options basically in the dal section  – dal tadka and dal makhani.  And as most of my family likes dal tadka  , dal tadka it is…… EVERYTIME .

And I , being the most North Indian person in my family , just love dal makhani . So I thought of making the awesome Ma ki Dal ( as its commonly known) at home , for myself!

Dal makhani is a North Indian delicacy with its velvety texture and rich creamy taste. Its best enjoyed with tandoori roti or naan and with lots of makkhan ( home made white butter ).

So here it is , the simplest recipe for dal makhani you’ve ever seen . Give it a shot !

  1. Soak the whole black lentils and rajma overnight or 8 hrs.
  2. Pressure cook the black lentils and rajma with some water for 2-3 whistles and then simmer for 10 minutes to get nicely cooked lentils.
  3. Let the lentils cool a bit and mash it nicely . you can also use a hand blender to get a smooth texture. Keep aside.
  4. Chop tomatoes , ginger and green chilli and make a puree using a mixer grinder. Keep aside.
  5. Heat oil in a kadhai. Add coriander powder , red chilli powder, cumin powder and garam masala. Add the prepared tomato puree to it and bhuno until the oil leaves the masala.
  6. Add salt to taste. Now add the mashed dal to it .
  7. Mix properly and bring it to a boil. Add a little water to adjust the consistency.
  8. Lastly add fresh cream and give it a stir.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot with roti or naan.
