Dathar vade – Toor Dal Vegetarian Side

Dathar vade is a lip smacking vegetarian side dish from the Maharashtrian kitchen. Its an easy and healthy preparation , made with Toor Dal ( split pigeon peas). Just serve them hot along with a meal or as an evening snack with tea.

This is the auspicious month of Shravan and my family fasts on all Mondays during this month. During this fast we have a full meal in the evening i.e. dinner , and rest of the day we have fruits , milk and sometimes sabudana.

For the dinner , along with the regular dal-chawal-roti-sabji , there is always something special to make a simple meal , tab bit more interesting.

Yesterday , the star of the menu were these Dathar Vade. Ready in just a few minutes , these give the meal the required crisp texture and the spicy flavor.

I never knew about these Dathar vade before marriage. On one of the fasting days my MIL made them , and they tasted super yum. So , When someone else cooks for you , and serves you piping hot food , you got to love it , right? Or was it the fact that I had fasted the entire day, so now everything was tasting yum? Nope . It was delicious .

I loved them because my Mil made it look so easy . The recipe requires much less oil ( compared to the deep fried ones) , tastes awesome , and is ready within minutes.

You can even try these for tea-time snack or kids snack box. A very healthy and nutritious preparation.

  • Do not grind the toor dal to a fine paste, keep it coarse to get a nice texture.
  • If you are not able to make the patty , or the mixture crumbles, add 1 – 2 tbsp of besan / gram flour to it.
