Kutchi Dabeli

Kutchi Dabeli is one of the famous street foods in India. It consists of a spicy potato filling , sweet n sour tamarind chutney, roasted peanuts and nylon sev, layered inside the Indian Bun Pav.

I came across this street food when I was visiting Nagpur , and fell in love with it instantly. The combination of spicy potato filling and the sweet tamarind chutney is just perfect . And The crunch from roasted peanuts and raw onions ( optional ) adds to the amazing taste. To top it up , hot Bun Pav , Maska maar ke J.

I had never tried making Dabeli at home . As with most street foods , I prefered to have them where they are made the best – the street!

But with kids by my side , I definitely have a lot of concerns about the street food ( quality and heigine ?? ).

Recently , I came across a dabeli masala packet and decided to give it a try. The best part about Dabeli is , you can keep everything ready beforehand. And when you are ready to serve just toast the Bun Pav’s with a little butter and serve hot !

They turned out to be finger licking good! … if I may say so myself.

For potato masala:
  • 3 tbsps oil
  • xbd kg Potatoes , boiled
  • 4 tbsps Masala Dabeli powder( recipe in the Tips section)
  • to taste Salt
For the toppings:
  • 2 onions , medium sized , finely chopped
  • xbd cup peanuts roasted spiced
  • xbd cup pomegranate seeds
  • xbd cup sev gram flour vermicelli nilon or
  • 12 Bun pav
  • Butter bun Pav for toasting the

Instructions
  1. For potato filling: Peel and mash the boiled potatoes and keep aside .Heat oil in a kadhai and add the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle the dabeli masala and mix properly into a smooth paste. Adjust salt . remove from heat and keep aside.

  3. Assembling the Dabeli : Take a Bun pav and slice it through the middle, leaving the two parts joined at one end. Apply some sweet tamarind chutney on the bottom part. Then put some potato filling and spread evenly. Top it up with roasted peanuts , chopped onions and a dash of sweet tamarind chutney again. Now press the two parts of the bun together and keep aside.
  4. Prepare all the bun pavu2019s in the same way.
  5. Roast these buns on both the sides with some butter. Roll it in a plate filled with sev and serve hot !
Recipe Notes

TIPS

  • You can prepare the tamarind chutney a day in advance and store in the refrigerator.
  • A lot of Dabeli Masala’s contain salt . So taste the potato mixture before adding salt.
  • If you don’t get the ready-made Dabeli masala , just add the below mentioned spices to the mashed potatoes and use for making dabeli. – ½ tsp turmeric powder , 1 tsp red chili powder , 1 tsp dhaniya powder , 1 tsp cumin powder , 1 tsp amchoor powder and 1 tsp garam masala powder.
